Research Activities

Biotechnology is one of the fast growing sectors in India as well as all over the world. This emerging field of biological sciences is going to take a leap forward in the next five years with a global share of 10 percent to 15 percent. The importance of biotechnology in India was recognized after the establishment of National Biotechnological Board in 1982. In 1986 Government of India formed a full-fledged department within the ministry of science and Technology. Biotechnology is essentially an interdisciplinary pursuit utilizing various branches of biology like Botany, Zoology, Microbiology etc., chemical sciences, physical sciences and mathematics. Today there are over 150 biotech companies in India and the requirement of trained hands in these companies are enormous.

The Biotechnology division of Mar Ivanios College was started in the year2001 and is attached to the Department of Botany. Being a tropical country endowed with vast resource of biodiversity with two major hot spots of biodiversity, the potential of Plant Biotechnology will prove to be very lucrative in the coming years. One of the primary objectives of the Biotechnology Division of Mar Ivanios College is to provide quality education in all spheres of Biotechnology with special trust in Plant Biotechnology and train the students so as to adapt to the international standards.  

The Department offers  B.Sc (BioTechnology) Degree programme. 

Course details  

Students of Biotechnology get  individual attention during theory and practical classes. Classes by experienced and dedicated teachers make the classes as well as  learning  an enjoyable experience, and  are conducted in an interactive mode supported by  audiovisuals. Eminent persons working in the field of Biotechnology are often  invited to visit the Department  and give lectures. Classes are conducive  to equip the students to qualify the Combined Biotechnology entrance examination conducted by the Jawaharlal Nehru University and other institutes of National repute.
