Rev. Dr. Mathew Manakarakavil, M.A., M. Phil., DLCF (Paris)

 

 

 

 

Rev. Dr. Mathew Manakarakavil, born on 10 November 1955, at Puthoor, Manakarakavil, Kottarakkara, in the Kollam District, assumed office as the ninth Principal of Mar Ivanios College on 1 June 2007. This is a privileged honour for Fr. Mathew since he had been an old student of Mar Ivanios College. He is an acclaimed teacher of French, having earned his DLCF Degree from the Catholic University in Paris which enables him to teach French anywhere in the world. He had graduated with two Gold medals from Loyola College Madras and then went on to complete his Post Graduation and M. Phil from the Madurai Kamaraj University and his Ph.D. from the M.S. University, Thirunalveli.

Fr. Mathew is a distinguished academician contributing to the Higher Education scenario in various capacities. Rev.Dr. Mathew Manakarakavil, the Principal was appointed as the coordinator of the UGC expert committe to evaluate the performance of the varsity during the X Plan and to assess the requirements for the XI Plan under the Head "General Development Grants and Merged Scheme" in the region of Karnataka State. He has been a member of the Academic Council and The faculty of Arts, University of Kerala. He has been serving as the Chairman and Member, Board of Studies, French and Latin. He is also in the Board of Studies of M.G.University, Kottayam. He has been actively participating in all activities related to the French Language in the city serving as the Zonal President of the French Association and also as member of the Alliance Francaise de Trivandrum.

On the home front he had been on the faculty of French, Mar Ivanios College since 1990. In 1999 he became the Head of the Department of French. He has been the spiritual father to the students of Mar Ivanios College in his capacity as the Director of the AICUF unit and also as the warden of the St. Thomas Hostel for Men.

In his academic pursuit he has attended and presented papers in national and International Seminars. He has traveled extensively abroad visiting countries like France, Brazil, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Israel, Sri Lanka, Qatar, Kuwait etc. His passion for French and the French people takes him annually to France.

On the spiritual front he is celebrating his sacerdotal silver Jubilee this year. In these twenty five years, he has served as the vicar in atleast twenty five parishes. He was instrumental in setting up two primary schools for the poor and the needy of his parishes. There are seven churches which were built as a result of the ceaseless striving of  Fr. Mathew.

On the education front he had his Philosophical and Theological training at the Oriental Institute Vadavathoor. [B.Th. (Theology), Oriental Institute, Vadavathoor, Kottayam– 686010 Kerala, India.

He had his Degree education at  Loyola College, Chennai, (Madras University,Chennai), Tamil Nadu, India (With  2 Gold medals for the  subject and English ). He became an exponent of French with his post graduate degree in French from Madurai Kamaraj University, Tamil Nadu (French literature from Moyen age to 20th century, Linguistics Technique of  Communication )

His M.Phil was from the Madurai Kamaraj   University, Tamil Nadu, India (Title of Thesis: Traduction ET COMMENTAIRE de Trois  Nouvelles de KAMALA DAS) His great love for the French language made him to do the DLCF (Paris) Diploma which is a two year course from the Catholic University, Paris, by which he became competent to teach French anywhere in the world.

Rev.Dr. Mathew Manakarakavil was awarded Doctorate in French, the first one to be awarded to a faculty member of French in any of the Universities of Kerala on the topic ‘A Comparative Study of the Feminism of Simon de Beauvoir and Kamala Das’ from the MS University, Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, India.

Award: Rotary Club Award for the best educationist of 2008.
